BFG September Meetup

i.lab (map)

Selected By: Tom Adams

This month we focus on Scala, with two talks. Firstly Kristian Domagala give us an introduction to Scala:

"In this talk, I will give an introduction to the Scala programming language, including basic syntax, language features, and its relation to Java. I will also show how you can use its functional programming capabilities and static type system to improve the quality and maintainability of your code."

Next up, Tom Adams gives us an overview of building a simple web app using sbt, Scalaz 4, Slinky and Scala Query.

Aim to arrive before 6pm, the external doors lock then. If you're late, call Tom on [masked] and we'll come let you in. Afterwards we can head to Jackpot for a bite to eat and a beer.

Great presentations by Kristian and Tom! :) I would like to see some of the following in future talks if possible: 1. Advanced Scala features not covered at the above presentation. (Higher Kinds, Monads etc) 2. A session about Java-Scala and Scala-Java interop. 3. Scala best-practice/design.

Two good talks - gained a lot of insight into the world of scala. Thank you.

Great intro into Scala, plus some good meat for those interested in web application development (like myself). Quality of presentation and venue were top notch.
